Traveling to Doi Inthanon is not difficult at all. Cars can easily drive to the summit without needing expert skills or a 4WD vehicle. Even city cars can reach the summit more easily than pickup trucks because smaller, lighter cars handle the climb better. There are three must-visit attractions at Doi Inthanon. The first is the highest peak in Thailand, located at the very top of the mountain, covered by cloud forest all year round.
Every large tree is covered with beautiful moss and ferns, making the cloud forest at Doi Inthanon's summit stunning and pleasantly cool throughout the year. Walking along the nature study trail at Ang Ka, the northernmost point of Doi Inthanon, feels like walking in a heavenly forest. The second attraction is the Phra That Naphamethinidon and Phra That Naphapholphumisiri pagodas, located just before the summit. These great pagodas belong to the Air Force and charge an entrance fee of 40 baht per person. This place is a sacred site for worship.
Visitors can enjoy the view, see the thousand-year-old roses, and take photos in the beautiful gardens. The third must-see attraction is the waterfalls. Doi Inthanon has many waterfalls, but you don't have to visit them all as it might be too tiring and spoil your relaxation. The waterfalls to choose from include Mae Ya Waterfall, Sirithan Waterfall (at km 22.5), Phadok Siao Waterfall, Siriphum Waterfall (near the camping area), and Mae Pan Waterfall. You can pick whichever waterfall you prefer to visit.
I recommend stopping at the viewpoint on the right side on the way down from Doi Inthanon's summit. There is a sign indicating a short uphill walk. I think this is the most beautiful viewpoint at Doi Inthanon, offering views of complex mountains covered with clouds. Photos taken looking down along the road are truly beautiful. However, parking here is a bit difficult due to the steep slope, so be cautious and use wheel chocks to prevent slipping. At the end of every year, frost forms on the grass and leaves at the summit of Doi Inthanon.
The frozen water is called 'Mae Kaning' in the Northeast, 'Mei Khab' by Northern people, and 'ice crystals on tree tops' in Central Thailand. If you have never seen this, visiting Doi Inthanon at the end of the year guarantees you won't miss it. If you plan to drive up yourself and have never driven on mountain roads before, here are some tips: For manual transmission cars, use low gear when descending and avoid excessive braking to prevent brake failure. When ascending, use low gear as well, or the car won't manage the climb.
But don't rev the engine too high to avoid overheating and potential damage. For automatic cars, it's easier; using L2 gear is sufficient for comfortable ascent and descent, except near the very end where L2 is definitely needed. If you bring a car but don't want to drive up, you can arrange for a ride at the junction going up Doi Inthanon; there are services available, and you can negotiate the price. Alternatively, you can take public transport from Chiang Mai to Chom Thong.
From Chom Thong, there are songthaews (shared taxis) going up Doi Inthanon. I once took the bus on my first trip to Doi Inthanon many years ago, which gave a different kind of experience. Winter is a great time to enjoy the cold breeze at Doi Inthanon's summit. If you can't wait, the summit is open every day with no closures. The parking lot at Doi Inthanon's summit is next to the Air Force radar station. The beautiful green cloud forest here can only be seen at this location. The nature trail at Doi Inthanon's summit attracts mountain biking enthusiasts speeding up the mountain. Buses going up Doi Inthanon pass through Kew Mae Pan. The weather is cool and comfortable enough to lie down on the road. The mist can be very thick on the way up, so be very careful.
