Water is carefully channeled from higher to lower levels along the terraces, creating a unique and beautiful landscape unlike the flat rice fields in central Thailand. Rice terraces are not very common in Thailand, but the most famous ones worldwide are in Sapa, Vietnam.

Mae Chaem is one of the few places in Thailand where you can see rice terraces, although not as extensive as in Vietnam. Besides Mae Chaem, I have also seen terraces in Mae Tuen, Omkoi District, Chiang Mai Province. Although some terraces in Mae Chaem have been replaced by cornfields in years when corn prices are high, there are still enough terraces to enjoy the beauty of Mae Chaem's rice terraces.
