Chiang Mai, Phra That Doi Koeng
Chiang Mai, Phra That Doi Koeng

Wat Phra Borom That Doi Koeng is located in Village No. 5, Tha Duea Subdistrict, Doi Tao District, about 60 kilometers from the Doi Tao District Office. There are two ways to get to Doi Koeng. If coming from Doi Tao, you must take a boat across the Ping River or across the Doi Tao lake, then hike up to Doi Koeng for another 2 hours (only during the water season). If coming by car, start from Hod District and drive towards Tha Duea, continue straight until the end of the road where signs will guide you to Doi Koeng without getting lost.

What makes it difficult is that the road up to Doi Koeng is not in good condition. It is sometimes rocky, sandy, or cemented, passing steep and winding cliffs. Some sections are so narrow that cars cannot pass each other. Therefore, sedans are not recommended, and only experienced mountain drivers should attempt it. After parking, you must walk a bit further up the stairs to reach the stupa. But once you reach the top of Phra That Doi Koeng, all fatigue will vanish. The stupa is very beautiful, golden against the dark sky, with a cool breeze.

The view extends far to Doi Tao District, with the Ping River flowing down to the Bhumibol Dam. When I visited, the water in Doi Tao lake was dry. Coming up here is definitely worth the trip. Wat Phra Borom That Doi Koeng houses an important sacred site: the stupa containing the Buddha's relics. On the left side of the relics (the left forehead bone), Queen Cham Thewi once came to pay respects here when she came to rule Hariphunchai (Lamphun).

In 1200 BE and again in 1920-1921 BE, Kruba Chao Sriwichai, a Lanna saint, restored and built a new stupa over the old one. On February 18, 1921 BE, Somdet Krom Phraya Damrong Rajanubhab visited to pay respects to Phra That Doi Koeng and to Kruba Sriwichai. Later, the site fell into neglect until 1986 BE when Kruba Boonsri Apipuno ascended as a forest monk and restored the buildings to the present day.

The final stairway leading up to Phra That Doi Koeng. The view is stunning, the breeze cool, and the stupa magnificent. The first part of the road is fully paved, but the latter part alternates between rocky and paved sections. At the front of Wat Phra That Doi Koeng, there is Queen Cham Thewi's boat that came to Doi Koeng, monks' quarters, the water in the middle of the temple, the view of Doi Tao lake from the viewpoint, the remaining Ping River after the lake dried up, and the Ping River within Doi Tao lake.
