The festival features six tall candles, about 6 meters high, made by bundling straw and bamboo. When guests from different villages arrive, all six candles are lit. The hosts, representing the whole village, perform a traditional Tai Yai dance to welcome the guests, accompanied by lively singing and music.
In the host village, every household must bring sticky rice wrapped in banana leaves, which is actually rice with food. When guests arrive, they are given a bundle each and invited into the festival. Each visiting village must prepare a performance from their village to present on stage. The hosts perform a welcoming bird dance at the entrance. If the next time another village holds a festival, the host village will join their parade as well. This is the way of life of the Tai Yai people in Piang Luang. Today, I was very lucky to experience the Tai Yai Candle Festival.
I was so excited about the festival that I arrived early before dark to wait for the parade. The Tai Yai community has their own security system; each household selects one village policeman. During the festival, these village policemen maintain peace and order, so visitors can enjoy the event safely. Today, I watched an authentic Tai Yai bird dance, which is now rare to see. The dancers wear impressive masks and perform movements similar to Thai boxing, including bowing in all four directions. I spoke with one of the bird dance performers.
He told me that when he lived in Kengtung, he was familiar with the bird dance but did not perform it often as it was considered ordinary. After moving to Thailand, fewer people performed the dance, so when there was a festival, he took it seriously and even taught others to dance. One Tai Yai performance I especially wanted to see is the Jad Tai dance, a unique dance that amazes the world. This dance is only performed at major festivals like the Poi Luang.
