Travel Chiang Mai Wiang Haeng Travel Wiang Haeng Travel Piang Luang

Wiang Haeng Travel Wiang Haeng Travel Piang Luang http://www.hotsia.com > Travel Chiang Mai > Wiang Haeng Travel Wiang Haeng Travel Piang Luang (To travel north of Pai, you must go to Wiang Haeng, the hidden town of the Tai Yai people) While every winter, Pai is crowded with people lining up to travel and eat or even competing to refuel, Wiang Haeng, a town 59 km north of Pai, remains peaceful with beautiful nature like Pai in the past or perhaps even better.

Few people know and travel here. No need to compete for sightseeing, no chaos from crowds. The walking street is quiet. Perhaps because this place is not a circular route and is hard to reach, no foreigners come here, so it’s not featured in Lonely Planet. This keeps Wiang Haeng attractive for nature lovers who dislike crowds. Almost all locals in Wiang Haeng are Tai Yai, with a small number of Lisu. Outsiders rarely live here.

Visiting Wiang Haeng feels like being outside Thailand, more like traveling in Kengtung, Myanmar. Travelers say Ban Huak is beautiful and might be the second Pai. Some say the terraced fields and beauty of Mae Chaem could be the second Pai. For me, there is no second Pai. I have stayed in both Mae Chaem and Pai, and also at Ban Huak for more than a day. Each place is very different. Pai has beautiful views and is like a valley town.

Mae Chaem’s terraced fields lie outside the town. Ban Huak has excellent air but fewer scenic spots and attractions. If I had to compare which place is most like Pai, I would say only Wiang Haeng. Wiang Haeng is just 59 km north of Pai, colder because it’s further north, and it encounters cold winds from China before Pai does. Pai has many hill tribes; Wiang Haeng has only Tai Yai. This is my second attempt to visit Wiang Haeng. The first time I came via Mueang Na after leaving Ang Khang.

But it rained before I arrived, making the route impassable. The second time I came via Chiang Dao, turning left directly to Wiang Haeng, which succeeded. This route is good, easy to drive, with few cars passing because it’s almost a dead-end. The road to Mueang Na is bad and rarely used. Regarding curves, it’s not as winding as the road to Pai but not less challenging. One accommodation in Wiang Haeng.

When I visited Wiang Haeng, it was winter. Early morning at Ban Rabiang Mai Resort, the fog was thick and the air very cold. After waking, I attended the Tan Kuey Salak morning event at Wat Sri Muang Mai. At noon, I visited Ban Piang Luang and then Wat Fa Wiang In, a temple jointly owned by Thailand and Myanmar. In the evening, I attended the Poi Thian festival at the temple, watching bird dances and stage performances. The Tai Yai have two important festivals: the Poi Thian festival I attended this time,

and the other is the Poi Luang festival or novice ordination ceremony. Poi Luang is the biggest annual event, featuring the Jat Tai dance, which I have never seen. It is a unique dance resembling a mix of likay and Burmese dance, with leg kicking movements. Wiang Haeng has beautiful views everywhere; you can stop your car to enjoy the scenery anywhere, just like Pai with its cold weather and beautiful views. If you go further toward the border, there is another village called Ban Piang Luang, also Tai Yai. The kilometers mark the main village and the border village. In the past, the border was temporarily open for crossing.

Later, when Myanmar organized its ethnic groups, it closed this border checkpoint and divided Wat Fa Wiang In in half. Regarding accommodation in Wiang Haeng, it seems two or three new places are under construction. The first place I recommend is Sarungkarn Hut Wiang Haeng, near Wiang Haeng town with free internet. I stayed here the first night. In Wiang Haeng town, there is another accommodation opposite Chiang Tung Noodle shop, owned by the same owner. For the second and third nights, I stayed at Ban Rabiang Mai.

This place is beautiful with great views. When I stayed, they were still installing internet. For food in Wiang Haeng, there seems to be only one restaurant, Chiang Tung Noodle, which is very delicious, I must say. In Piang Luang, there is a restaurant before the temple on the left selling beer and made-to-order food, open late. Another restaurant I often eat at is Khun Fu Ratchan’s place (save this name). It is located in the Piang Luang market on the left side and serves as both a hair salon and restaurant. This place cooks food that I really like.

Wiang Haeng still has few tourists. If you want to visit, this is the time. Getting here is not difficult. From Chiang Dao, turn left and drive 72 km to reach. If in the future the road from Wiang Haeng to Pai improves, the atmosphere I saw might disappear. Hurry and visit now. The views in Wiang Haeng are all this beautiful. Just before Wiang Haeng, a Tai Yai girl at the Tan Kuey Salak morning event.

Everyone here wears Tai Yai costumes. Lisu girl at Ban Lao Wu selling melons. In Wiang Haeng, rice threshing is still done manually, not by machine. Kilometer marker in front of Ban Rabiang Mai Resort. Entrance to Ban Piang Luang. Tan Kuey Salak morning event. Tai Yai girls in Wiang Haeng. Tai Yai parade at Tan Kuey event. Host dressed in Tai Yai costume welcoming guests to the temple event. Tan Salak machine with Tai Yai script. Everyone wears this style. Oops, Tai Yai are thirsty :) Trip by Mr.Hotsia to Wiang Haeng Poi Thian Tai Yai festival.
